The Sindh School Education Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on August 4, 2026, on account of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

According to a notification issued by the department, all government and private schools will observe a holiday on 20th Safar 1448 AH, which falls on August 4 (Tuesday).

The notification applies to all public and private educational institutions under the jurisdiction of the School Education Department across Sindh

“In pursuance of the decision taken in the meeting of the Steering Committee held on 12-02-2026, all public and private educational institutions working under the administrative control of the School Education & Literacy Department, Government of Sindh, shall remain closed on 4th August, 2026 on account of Chehlum (20th Safar 1448 AH),” the notification added.

A day earlier, the Sindh Home Department imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding on the occasion of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala is observed annually on the 20th of Safar-ul-Muzaffar, marking the end of the 40-day mourning period following their martyrdom in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

Mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia and Zuljinah will be taken out in various cities across the province.

The home department has also extended the enforcement of Section 144 across Sindh for another month. The extension will take effect from August 1, a notification said.

Under the restrictions, wall chalking, rallies, demonstrations and the public display of weapons will remain prohibited throughout the province.
