People around the world look forward to Black Friday each year, hoping to snag unbeatable deals on products they’ve had on their wishlists for months. But what exactly is Black Friday? How Did Black Friday Originate?
The term “Black Friday” has origins dating back to the mid-20th century. Interestingly, back then, it was not linked with shopping but with chaos. Police in Philadelphia first used the phrase to describe the chaos that followed Thanksgiving, when huge crowds would flock to the city for holiday shopping and the annual Army-Navy football game. The overwhelming traffic, packed streets, and pressure on the police force led officers to term it “Black Friday”. Later, retailers adopted the term and gave it a more positive meaning.
Why Are All Companies Announcing Sales?
For companies, Black Friday is more than just another sale time on the calendar. It is a crucial opportunity for businesses to boost their profits. The huge discounts offered during this period often contribute significantly to their yearly revenue. The massive price cuts draw in millions of shoppers. Plus, retailers use the day to clear out their old stock. Special deals also help attract new customers.
