According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), remittances in January 2025 reached $3 billion, marking a substantial 25.2% increase compared to January 2024.

Consistent Growth Throughout the Fiscal Year

This upward trend continued steadily throughout the fiscal year. From July 2024 to January 2025, Pakistan received a total of $20.8 billion in remittances, a remarkable 31.7% rise compared to the $15.8 billion recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The UAE Sees a Surge in Remittances

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) followed closely, contributing $621.7 million in January 2025. This represented a slight 0.37% increase from December 2024 and a significant 53% jump from the $407.6 million recorded in January 2024.

The UK and US Maintain Strong Remittance Inflows

The Crucial Role of Remittances in Pakistan’s Economy

The steady increase in remittances underscores the essential role of overseas Pakistanis in strengthening the country’s economy. These inflows are critical for maintaining foreign exchange reserves and supporting household incomes. The SBP has acknowledged that remittances play a key role in economic stability and national development.

SBP Launches “Remittance Survey – 2025”

To understand remittance trends and future projections, the SBP has launched the “Remittance Survey – 2025.” This initiative aims to gather insights from overseas Pakistanis, helping policymakers create strategies that align with the needs of both expatriates and the national economy.

Factors Driving the Surge in Remittances

Several factors have contributed to this rise in remittances. The global economic recovery post-pandemic has improved employment opportunities for Pakistani workers abroad, enabling them to send more money home. Additionally, efforts to formalize remittance channels and curb illegal foreign exchange transactions have made fund transfers more secure and efficient.

Digital Payment Initiatives Boost Remittance Flows

The government and financial institutions have taken steps to encourage digital remittances. Visa, in partnership with 1Link, Pakistan’s largest payment service provider, is streamlining remittance processes and promoting digital transactions. This initiative aims to increase the number of businesses accepting digital payments tenfold in the next three years, making remittance transfers more affordable and accessible.

Projected Growth in Remittances for 2025

With the current momentum, remittances are projected to reach a record-breaking $35 billion by the end of the fiscal year, compared to $30 billion in the previous year. This optimistic outlook is fueled by the unwavering commitment of overseas Pakistanis and the government’s proactive measures to facilitate remittance inflows.

Conclusion: Overseas Pakistanis Continue to Support Economic Growth

The rise in remittances during 2025 highlights the deep connection between overseas Pakistanis and their homeland. Their financial contributions not only sustain families but also strengthen Pakistan’s economic foundation. As the country implements policies to enhance remittance channels, the positive impact on economic stability and growth is expected to continue.
