Sanjay Dutt announces Khalnayak Returns, a sequel to the 1993 hit Khalnayak, reviving his iconic role, Ballu
Sanjay Dutt has officially announced the sequel to his iconic 1993 film Khal Nayak. The film, now titled “Khalnayak Returns”, marks the comeback of one of Bollywood’s most remembered characters, Ballu.
The announcement was made during a special event in Mumbai, where Sanjay Dutt revealed that the rights of Khal Nayak have been acquired from director Subhash Ghai and his production banner Mukta Arts. The sequel is being developed in collaboration with producer Aksha Kamboj and Aspect Entertainment.
A teaser of the film was also shown at the event, giving fans a first look at Dutt returning in his famous role. The visuals show him in a more intense, darker, and action-heavy version of Ballu, suggesting a grittier storyline compared to the original film.
Speaking at the launch, Sanjay Dutt said the idea for the sequel actually came to him during his time in jail in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. He shared that he once asked fellow inmates if they would like to see a sequel, and thousands of them supported the idea. He even had them write down their thoughts, which he later discussed with Subhash Ghai.
He also thanked Subhash Ghai for trusting him with the legacy of Khal Nayak, calling the film very close to his heart and saying it has always remained popular among fans even after decades.
The original Khal Nayak, released in 1993, starred Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff, and became one of the biggest hits of its time. The story followed the character Ballu, an anti-hero who became one of Bollywood’s most iconic villains.
