Well we’ve reached the day of Fries. Freya’s day. The frizzly, frigid, frightening day we call Friday. Just Friday the 9th, however. Nothing so spooky as the 13th. Still, a fine day all told. Not only is it almost the weekend, it’s also 2XP Friday for those of you fine folk who play Competitive Wordle with me or the Wordle Bot or your Gruncle Stan, or whoever it might be that you get all competitive with.
So, without further adieu, let’s solve this Wordle!

I started off with PLAID because I’ve been watching this very Scottish mystery series Shetland on BritBox and it puts words like that in my head. KILT is too short. BAGPIPE too long. In any case, didn’t work well at all: 577 words remained. Ouch.
STORE slashed that number down to just four: I went with GOUGE because it’s a cool word just pulsing with violent potential. Alas, OUNCE was the Wordle!
Competitive Wordle Score
I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot who somehow got today’s in just three. That’s -1 x 2 for a total of -2 points today. Lame!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “ounce” originates from the Latin uncia, meaning “a twelfth part,” referring to 1/12th of a Roman pound. This term evolved into Old French as unce or once and was then adopted into Middle English as ounce, maintaining its meaning as a small unit of weight.
