135-member American Punjabi Society delegation arrives in Pakistan

Overseas Pakistanis Foundation Chairman Syed Qamar Raza welcomes delegation at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport on November 22, 2024.

A 135-member delegation from the American Punjabi Society arrived at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport on Friday, led by the society’s president, Garry Sikka.

Overseas Pakistanis Foundation Chairman Syed Qamar Raza welcomed the delegation at the airport. The delegates were then escorted to the Royal Swiss Hotel under Lahore Police security protocol.

The delegation plans to visit prominent Gurdwaras in Pakistan. Their arrival comes amid reports that Indian authorities have attempted to discourage wealthy Sikhs from traveling to Pakistan to visit Sikh holy sites.

Pakistani officials believe India may be selectively encouraging only less affluent Sikhs to visit, potentially to limit religious tourism revenue.

The Sikh visitors from the US received a warm welcome in Lahore, with locals greeting them with garlands.

The American Punjabi Society promotes Punjab’s arts and culture while providing social and community services.

Its mission focuses on preserving Punjabi culture and improving community members’ lives. Pakistani authorities say they are working to streamline travel processes for Western Sikhs visiting the country.
