Lisa Kudrow reveals true feelings about ‘Smelly Cat’ song from ‘Friends’

Lisa Kudrow will re-enact any line from Friends, but she draws the line at Smelly Cat.

In a new interview with Fresh Air on Tuesday, August 25, the 63-year-old actress said she had “zero complaints” about her legacy as Phoebe Buffay following her decades later.

“Just the relationship with the other actors — we had fun. That is so rare,” Kudrow said of her co-stars, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and the late Matthew Perry. “And real honest respect, mutual respect. It was a really good relationship that took some work and we did the work. It was great!”

The Comeback star noted that the cast spent up to 20 hours a day together, especially in the beginning. “We made sure we did. We played poker together while we’re waiting for the run through or while, you know, any downtime. We spent that time together.”

According to Kudrow, “Everything about it was great. But sometimes people will stop me and say, ‘Sing Smelly Cat.’ I don’t want to do that. I really don’t want to do that.”

Fans of the show would know that Smelly Cat was one of the most iconic songs composed by Phoebe, who was even offered to record a music video for it.

The song gained so much popularity that even pop superstar Taylor Swift sang it, inviting Kudrow on stage for a duet. But given Kudrow’s most recent comments, that was probably the last time she would ever sing Smelly Cat in real life.
