Lizzo gets candid about darkest moments of her career

Lizzo is looking back at the moment fame went from a dream to something she barely recognised.

During Monday’s episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert, the singer admitted she never fully realised just how massive her career had become.

“I wasn’t even really perceiving how famous I had gotten,” Lizzo said. “I feel like a regular girl in the Twin Cities, walk into the bar, going to get some cheese curds and a beer. I still feel like that girl.”

While she was feeling like her usual self, the world was watching her every move.

“But the whole world is like, everything I did was news. I had been going full throttle. It was like, clothing line. It was like, TV show, tour, album, actually really doing well. Like, oh my God. I didn’t even know how well the album was doing. I wasn’t paying attention.”

The singer, 38, career exploded after Truth Hurts became a massive hit in 2019, earning her three Grammys the following year. She later expanded into television, film and fashion with Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, Love, Lizzo and Yitty.

But the highs were followed by intense backlash and lawsuits from former employees, allegations Lizzo has denied. The controversy also pushed her away from music for a period.

“I was like, ‘Whoa, this feels like my life is over,’” she recalled.

The About Damn Time crooner said the backlash made her question whether she should “cease to exist,” but the experience ultimately forced her to rethink who she was beyond being a performer.

“You know, what I came to is knowing who you are and not what you do,” she said.

“It was extremely freeing because I’m like, ‘Oh, only I know me, only I know who I am and I need to remember that and not allow someone to change that because I can do that too.’”
