What is Taylor Swift’s new VMA honour mystery?
Taylor Swift is getting a brand-new MTV VMA honour — and the show’s executive producer has hinted the idea may not have started inside MTV.
The 36-year-old singer will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 VMAs, recognising artists whose behind-the-camera work has helped push music-video storytelling forward.
Swift has earned 31 VMA wins, making her the most-awarded artist in the show’s history, and has won Best Director four times.
Speaking with AP Entertainment, executive producer Bruce Gillmer described the new prize as an extension of the Video Vanguard Award — but suggested the concept came from elsewhere.

“The Artist Director Honor really is an extension of the [Video] Vanguard [Award]. And in many ways, even larger in stature because it was an idea that, quite frankly, the kernel of the idea came from external. I’ll leave it at that.”
Gillmer didn’t say who first floated the idea, leaving fans to speculate whether the suggestion came from Swift’s team, the music industry or somewhere else.
MTV praised Swift’s visual storytelling in its announcement, noting that her projects feature “interconnected narratives, cinematic worlds and recurring details that invite audiences deeper into each project.”

The ceremony airs live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27 on CBS, with a simulcast on MTV and a live stream for Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the U.S.
