Nadra Introduces Pakistan’s First Digital ID Card
A Milestone in National Identity Management on Its 25th Anniversary

Pakistan has officially entered the era of digital identity with the launch of its first dematerialized ID card, a groundbreaking initiative by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra). As the country’s premier identity management institution celebrates 25 years of service, this innovation marks a major shift in how citizens interact with official identification documents.
The introduction of the digital ID is set to revolutionize identity management by integrating national ID services into the Pak ID mobile application. This means that Pakistani citizens will no longer need to carry a physical ID card, as they will have secure digital access to their identification documents through their smartphones.
Additionally, Pakistan is gearing up for a comprehensive digital verification system, expected to enhance security and streamline authentication processes for various public and private sector services. The system, part of the World Bank-funded Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), will be launched as a pilot project on August 14, 2025.

To commemorate Nadra’s silver jubilee, a special ceremony was held at its headquarters, attended by key government officials, past and present leadership, and notable figures from Pakistan’s governance and technology sectors.
Among the highlights of the celebration was the unveiling of a commemorative coin issued by the State Bank of Pakistan and a special postage stamp by Pakistan Post, marking the institution’s quarter-century of service.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent congratulatory messages, recognizing Nadra’s contributions in establishing a reliable and secure national database.
President Zardari emphasized Nadra’s role in strengthening the social contract between the state and its citizens. He praised its advancements in technology, urging the organization to continue exploring emerging digital solutions to enhance service delivery and accessibility.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended Nadra’s achievements in data integration and AI-driven modeling, highlighting its global reputation as the third-largest demographic database. He stressed that digital identity solutions play a critical role in promoting economic growth, governance efficiency, and social inclusion.
A Step Towards a Fully Digital Identity
Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi hailed the introduction of the dematerialized ID card as a significant step toward digital transformation. He acknowledged Nadra’s extensive outreach, ensuring identity services are accessible even in Pakistan’s most remote regions as well as for overseas Pakistanis.
Additionally, he highlighted Nadra’s vital role in governance, law enforcement, and public security, emphasizing that its advancements reinforce national security while improving administrative efficiency.
Reflections on Nadra’s Legacy and Future
The event’s chief guest, Nadra’s founding chairman, retired Maj Gen Zahid Ehsan, took the stage to reflect on the authority’s early days. He shared how Nadra evolved from a small initiative into one of the world’s most advanced identity management systems.
He noted that Nadra continues to set new benchmarks in digital innovation, proving its commitment to excellence and modernization.
Former chairpersons, board members, senior government officials, and representatives from the interior ministry, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), immigration, and passport authorities also attended the event, underscoring the significance of Nadra’s contributions over the past 25 years.
The event included a documentary screening showcasing Nadra’s journey, milestones, and impact on governance. Additionally, a book chronicling its 25-year history was launched, documenting its role in shaping Pakistan’s digital landscape.
