Curd is a staple in Indian households and is commonly enjoyed with meals such as hot parathas, dal-rice, or simply on its own. It not only enhances taste but also aids digestion. But a common question often arises – should curd be eaten with salt or sugar?
Salt or Sugar In Curd?
While some people prefer sweet curd by adding sugar, others enjoy it with a pinch of salt, cumin powder, or even chopped salad. For various reasons, curd with salt is a year-round favourite. But is this choice really the healthiest?
According to dietitian Mamta Pandey, curd is more beneficial when consumed with sugar, mishri (sugar candy), or even jaggery. These combinations help maintain the probiotic properties of curd. On the other hand, curd with salt—especially if kept for long after mixing—should be avoided. If you prefer a salty taste, it’s best to add a pinch of black salt or rock salt just before eating.
How Salt Affects The Benefits of Curd
Experts explain that adding salt to curd and storing it affects the activity of Lactobacillus bacteria, which are responsible for curd’s probiotic benefits. These bacteria are essential for gut health. When curd is mixed with salt and kept for long, the bacterial count drops, reducing its health value.
Moreover, people suffering from conditions like arthritis, joint pain, asthma, kidney issues, or cold and cough should ideally avoid curd altogether, especially if it’s consumed with salt.
Should You Avoid Curd During Monsoon?
The monsoon season weakens digestion, which is why doctors often advise reducing or avoiding curd intake during this time. Eating curd at night may lead to issues like bloating, gas, and a feeling of heaviness. While curd has several health benefits, timing and method of consumption play a crucial role.
Health experts emphasise that curd is only truly beneficial when eaten in the right quantity, at the right time, and in the right way. So, if you want to continue enjoying your curd while reaping its full health benefits, opt for sugar or jaggery, and be mindful of when and how you consume it.
