Alcaraz Advances, Osaka Falls at Wimbledon

Alcaraz's Victory Sets Up Thrilling Duel

LONDON – Carlos Alcaraz powered into the Wimbledon third round on Wednesday, setting up a thrilling match with fellow crowd favorite Frances Tiafoe. In a surprise upset, Naomi Osaka was defeated in the second round by American Emma Navarro, who dominated the match and allowed Osaka only five games.

Dominant Performance Against Vukic

Alcaraz overcame Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 6-2 victory, delivering 42 winners. The Spanish third seed had a shaky moment in the first set, nearly losing his 5-2 lead before steadying himself to win. Alcaraz will now face Tiafoe, whom he defeated in a dramatic five-set semi-final at the 2022 US Open.

Ready for High-Level Tennis

“I’m ready to play a really high level of tennis and hopefully take him,” Alcaraz said, aiming to join the elite group of men who have won the French Open and Wimbledon consecutively.

Tiafoe’s Straight-Set Win

Tiafoe secured his third-round spot by defeating Borna Coric in straight sets. In other matches, Italy’s Fabio Fognini needed several match points to beat eighth-seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3.

Ruud’s Struggles on Grass

Ruud, primarily successful on clay and hard courts, admitted, “I just find it difficult…the movement and feeling confident out there.”

Fognini’s Unpredictable Style

Fognini, known for his unpredictable style and sporting bleach-blond hair, served twice for the match at 5-2 in the third set before clinching the win in the fourth.

Medvedev’s Comeback Victory

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, bounced back from losing the first set and facing two set points in the second to defeat France’s Alexandre Muller 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 7-5. Czech Tomas Machac battled a tough five-setter to overcome Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-6 (10/5).

Navarro Dominates Osaka

Naomi Osaka, playing her first Wimbledon since 2019, was swiftly defeated by 17th-ranked Navarro 6-4, 6-1 on Centre Court. Navarro broke Osaka’s serve early in the second set and maintained her dominance to secure the win.

Gauff’s Smooth Progression

Elsewhere, Coco Gauff, the US Open champion, moved into the third round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni. Gauff, who first made headlines at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old in 2019, will next face British qualifier Sonay Kartal. Kartal, ranked 298, defeated Clara Burel 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Raducanu’s Comfortable Win

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open winner, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Elise Mertens. Canada’s Bianca Andreescu eliminated Czech teenager Linda Noskova 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).

Murray and Raducanu Team Up

In a notable development, Andy Murray is teaming up with Raducanu for mixed doubles at Wimbledon, receiving a wild card entry. It marks Murray’s return to the tournament after withdrawing from singles due to fitness issues. He will also play men’s doubles with his brother Jamie, and their campaign will start on Centre Court on Thursday.

Mixed Doubles Challenge

Murray previously paired with Serena Williams in mixed doubles in 2019, reaching the third round. Raducanu’s Grand Slam debut in doubles will be when they face Marcelo Arevalo and Zhang Shuai in a challenging first-round match.
