Learn why your knee clicks, when it’s harmless, and when it signals a medical issue. Expert explains common causes, warning signs, diagnosis and modern treatments for knee clicking

A harmless kind of clicking, known medically as crepitus is usually caused by tiny air bubbles trapped and released within the joint fluid
Most people have, at some point, heard a popping or clicking sound coming from their knee. Everyday actions like walking, bending down, or climbing stairs can trigger this noise. In many cases, this sound is harmless, it often occurs when a tendon or ligament moves naturally over the bone. When there is no pain, swelling, stiffness, instability, or difficulty bending, knee clicking is usually not a cause for concern.
According to Dr. Vinay Kumar Gautam, Dr. Vinay Kumar Gautam, Consultant, Orthopaedics, Shoulder, Arthroscopy & Sports Injury, and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Manipal Hospital Kharadi, Pune shares that one of the most complex and functional joints in the body is the knee, constantly working to support body weight and enable movement. Over time, overuse, injury, cartilage wear, or age-related degeneration can affect how the knee functions.
A harmless kind of clicking, known medically as crepitus is usually caused by tiny air bubbles trapped and released within the joint fluid. This type of clicking does not damage the knee and typically does not require medical treatment.
However, when clicking is accompanied by pain, swelling, or restricted movement, it may signal an underlying issue. Conditions such as meniscus tears, ligament injuries, patellar tracking disorders, or early osteoarthritis can disrupt the knee’s alignment and cushioning, creating friction and noise during movement.
To diagnose the problem and assess any structural damage, doctors may recommend X-rays or MRI scans. Initial treatment often includes physiotherapy, strengthening exercises, anti-inflammatory medications, and lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy weight and adjusting activity levels.
For persistent symptoms or advanced joint damage, surgical interventions may offer long-term relief. Arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure allows surgeons to insert a camera and fine instruments through tiny incisions to repair torn cartilage, smooth rough surfaces, or remove loose fragments. Recovery is typically quick, with most patients returning to routine activities much sooner than with traditional open surgery.
In more severe cases, partial or total knee replacement may be advised, especially when significant pain, deformity, or joint degeneration is present. Thanks to advancements in implant materials and surgical techniques, these procedures now deliver excellent long-term outcomes, improving mobility and quality of life.
Dr Gautam emphasises that knee clicking should not be ignored, particularly when accompanied by discomfort or swelling. Early evaluation ensures timely treatment and prevents worsening of the condition. With modern surgical technology and enhanced medical methods, knee care has become safer, faster, and more effective, helping patients regain confidence and move with ease.
