Holi 2026 Date: The date of Holi this year has sparked confusion across India, with some states celebrating it on March 3 and others on March 4 due to Lunar Eclipse. Kashi Vidwat Parishad has issued a detailed clarification. Scholars at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) convened a meeting and released the complete calendar for the festival of colours in 2026.

In 2026, there will be more than a 24-hour gap between Holika Dahan and Holi. Traditionally, Holika Dahan is performed at midnight on the full moon (Purnima) during an auspicious muhurat free from Bhadra, and Holi is celebrated the following day.

However, in 2026, Holika Dahan will take place on March 2, while Holi will be celebrated across India on March 4 (Chaitra Krishna Pratipada).

Lunar Eclipse Reason Behind Date Difference

Pandit Vinay Pandey, Minister of the Vidwat Parishad and Head of BHU’s Department of Astrology, explained that special astronomical circumstances have caused the unusual gap this year.

A lunar eclipse will occur on March 3 at 5:49 pm and will be visible in India. The Sutak period will begin around 9 am on March 3. Until that time, the full moon will prevail. As a result, Holi will be observed nationwide on March 4 during Pratipada.

Auspicious Time For Holika Dahan

Pandit Vinay Pandey stated that two conditions are essential for Holika Dahan: the presence of the full moon at night and a muhurat free from Bhadra. When such complexities arise, the least inauspicious time is chosen in accordance with scriptures.

On the night of March 2, the full moon coincides with the tail (Puchh) of Bhadra. According to religious texts, Bhadra’s tail is not considered harmful. Therefore, tradition recognises the night of March 2 as appropriate for Holika Dahan.

The shubh muhurat for Holika Dahan will be between 12:50 am and 2:32 am that night.
