Why Does France Celebrate National Day On July 14?
The Bastille, originally designed as a medieval fort, was later converted into a government prison. Political detainees taken for trial by the police were routinely detained there. Some convicts were imprisoned on the king’s express orders, which were unarguable. On July 14, 1789, a mob stormed the Bastille to free seven convicts. The act signalled the start of the French Revolution.
During the early months of the French Revolution, Paris was tense because the Estates-General refused to disband, instead transforming itself into a constituent National Assembly.
In July 1789, King Louis XVI called for reinforcements and dismissed his popular minister, Jacques Necker. On July 14, Parisians stole firearms from the armoury at the Invalides and marched towards the Bastille.
After several rounds of gunfire, people stormed the Bastille and freed the captives. The storming of the Bastille was viewed as the country’s first victory over the old regime. Benjamin Raspail, a delegate from the Seine department, declared the day a national holiday in July 1880.
In France, the event is called the Fête Nationale, and it also represents national unity. Meanwhile, English-speaking countries refer to the French national holiday as Bastille Day.

The fall of the Bastille marked the end of absolute monarchical authority and the beginning of democratic power enacted by the French people, which was later formalised in documents such as the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, as well as the establishment of the First French Republic.
The revolution brought about significant political and social changes, including the eradication of feudal privileges, the development of secularism, and the spread of democratic principles. These concepts transformed not only France but also Europe’s future history and democracy as a whole.

Every year, Bastille Day is marked with grandeur and enthusiasm as fireworks illuminate the Eiffel Tower. Francophiles all across the world celebrate Bastille Day by attending concerts showcasing French music or throwing French-themed dinners.
On this memorable day, the traditional military parade on the Champs-Élysées takes place. Dance and fireworks displays, as well as special illuminations, are held throughout the country.
