World Soil Day is observed every year on December 5, and in times when the environment is deteriorating at an alarming pace, this day holds far more importance than just another date on the calendar.
Our planet’s survival depends heavily on the precious layers of soil beneath our feet, and yet we continue to overlook how rapidly it is being degraded.
More than 95% of our food comes from soil, but despite this staggering fact, soil health remains one of the most neglected environmental concerns. According to the United Nations, it can take nearly 1,000 years to form just 2–3 cm of soil.
World Soil Day History
The idea of dedicating an international day to soil was first proposed by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2002.
With the support of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and guided by the Kingdom of Thailand through the Global Soil Partnership, efforts were made to formally establish World Soil Day as a global awareness initiative.
In December 2013, the UN General Assembly declared that the first official World Soil Day would be celebrated on 5 December 2014.
World Soil Day 2025 Theme
Whenever we talk about soil conservation or stopping soil degradation, most of us instantly picture a rural landscape, don’t we? However, we often forget that urban soil matters just as much.
This year’s theme, “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities,” is a reminder of exactly that. Beneath all the towering buildings, busy roads, and endless construction, there’s soil that plays a crucial role.
It can absorb rainwater, reduce flooding, and even help improve air quality, something every city struggles with today.
But when we smother this soil under layers of cement and concrete, it loses its natural functions, and the results show up in very real ways, such increased flooding, rising temperatures, and worsening pollution.
