Karachi police chief seeks report on cops’ ‘misconduct’ in DHA residents’ scuffle

KARACHI: Karachi Police chief Azad Khan took notice on Sunday of the violent scuffle between two families in Defence’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari and sought a report within three days on the alleged misconduct of police officers visible in the viral video.

Separately, DIG South Asad Raza has summoned both parties to his office on Monday, along with the officers allegedly involved in the incident.

Sources said the officers visible in the video belonged to the Korangi district, and that details of the involved personnel had been sought from SSP Korangi. DIG South also said forensic examination of the video would be carried out.

The viral CCTV footage showed a woman descending the stairs of the apartment building alongside uniformed police officers, holding a dumbbell in her hands, before repeatedly striking another woman standing outside the flat.

When the victim resisted, the police officers restrained the victims — the woman being assaulted and her companion — rather than the attacker. A plainclothes individual was also seen taking an officer’s official weapon and using it to smash a CCTV camera.

The victim, Noor ul Ain, alleged that the influential woman not only physically assaulted her but also had her and her brother arrested and a case registered against them. Both siblings were subsequently granted bail within a few days.

A dispute between two women at an apartment in DHA’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari escalated into a physical altercation. Noor ul Ain shared a video of the incident on social media after the assault, which went viral rapidly. The affected family subsequently filed a complaint at Darakhshan police station.

Affected resident Ali Ahsan said the family had been living in the building since November 2021. He said a woman residing on the fourth floor collected maintenance charges, and that the family had paid their charges in advance.

He said the woman had cut off their water supply, and when they installed a water tank, she damaged it. She had also threatened to cut off their electricity, he added.

Police authorities confirmed earlier that the officers in the video did not belong to South Zone and were likely from the Korangi district, adding that the double-cabin vehicle visible in one of the videos was also not a South Zone police vehicle.

DIG South Asad Raza confirmed the victims were a brother and sister who had been living in the apartment with their mother, saying the inquiry would be conducted on merit. Following the incident, the affected family left the flat and shifted elsewhere.
