Emphasis on Responsible Opposition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking before the inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha, emphasized the need for a responsible Opposition. He called for substantial debates over mere slogans, stating, “India needs responsible Opposition. People want substance, not slogans; they want debate and diligence, not disturbance in Parliament.”

Expectations from the Opposition

In a video shared by ANI, PM Modi expressed his hopes for the Opposition. He said, “The people of the country expect good steps from the opposition. I hope that the opposition will live up to the expectations of the common citizens of the country to maintain the dignity of democracy. People do not want drama, disturbance.”

Welcoming New Parliamentarians

Welcoming the newly elected members of parliament, PM Modi hailed the day as significant in India’s democratic journey. Speaking as an MP from Varanasi, he underscored the importance of the current session and its potential to advance India towards the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Reflection on Recent Elections

Reflecting on the recent elections, Modi remarked, “India witnessed the world’s largest elections, completed with great fanfare, marking a moment of pride. This election was especially noteworthy as, for the second time since independence, a government has been re-elected for a third consecutive term.”

Significance of June 25

The Prime Minister also highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Emergency on June 25, calling it a ‘black spot’ on India’s democracy when the Constitution was disregarded. He stated, “Tomorrow is June 25. For those dedicated to the dignity of the Indian Constitution and democratic traditions, it is a day that can never be forgotten. It marks the completion of 50 years since the black spot on Indian democracy when the Constitution was rejected, destroyed, and the country was turned into a prison through the declaration of Emergency.”

Commitment to Hard Work

PM Modi assured the nation of his government’s dedication, saying, “I want to assure the people that our government will work three times harder in its third term and deliver three times more.”

Role of Young Parliamentarians

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the significant presence of young parliamentarians, highlighting their role in shaping the future of the nation.

Upcoming Session and Key Appointments

The first session, running until July 3, is expected to outline PM Modi’s plans for his third term. It is also anticipated that Rahul Gandhi will be formally appointed as the Leader of the Opposition, a position that has been vacant since 2014.
