Why your skin looks tired even when you have a skincare routine

Dehydration: One of the reasons the skin appears tired is because of dehydration. Lack of enough water in the skin causes it to look dry, rough and tight or less plump, with fine lines becoming more noticeable.

Dehydration can occur due to weather changes, prolonged exposure to air conditioning, inadequate fluid intake or the use of harsh cleansers and active ingredients. Importantly, oily skin can also be dehydrated. Excess oil does not necessarily mean that the skin has adequate water content.

Sun exposure: Cumulative sun exposure is another major contributor to dull and tired-looking skin. Ultraviolet radiation can cause pigmentation, uneven skin tone, roughness and premature skin ageing.

Many people follow an elaborate skincare routine but remain inconsistent with sunscreen. This can significantly reduce the benefits of other products. A broad spectrum sunscreen should therefore be considered an essential part of a daily skincare routine, particularly when spending time outdoors.

Inappropriate or excessive skincare products: A skincare routine should address the individual needs of the skin. Cleansing and moisturising are the foundation, but they may not be sufficient if someone has pigmentation, acne, uneven texture or signs of ageing.

At the same time, more products do not necessarily mean better skin. The combination of different acids, retinoids, or other skin-active components can also cause irritation and damage to the barrier. This could manifest in the form of dryness, reddening, sensitiveness, and dullness of the skin.

It is better to start introducing different products step-by-step and avoid changing the routine too often.

Lifestyle factors: The condition of the skin can be an indicator of your general lifestyle. Such elements as a lack of sleep, constant stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, and level of physical activities might all lead to a less healthy and radiant skin.

Sleep is especially vital since the process of skin recovery happens during the sleeping hours. Balanced nutrition with proper amount of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients is also required for the normal functioning of the skin.

Persistent dullness, particularly when associated with symptoms such as excessive fatigue, hair loss or other changes, may occasionally warrant evaluation for nutritional deficiencies or an underlying medical condition.
