Threads Reaches Milestone

Over 17.5 Million Monthly Users in One Year

Meta launched its social media platform Threads on July 5, 2023, as a competitor to X (formerly Twitter). Threads has amassed more than 17.5 million monthly users in just one year, marking significant growth for the platform.

A Year of Growth and Evolution

On Threads’ first anniversary, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg proudly announced the platform’s impressive user growth. Over the past year, Threads has seen a steady increase in its user base. However, the initial enthusiasm that propelled its rapid early adoption has waned somewhat.

Daily User Statistics: A Missing Piece

While Meta frequently shares daily user statistics for its other platforms—Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram—it has yet to disclose similar metrics for Threads. This omission leaves a gap in understanding the platform’s day-to-day engagement.

Instagram Integration Fuels Growth

It integrates with Instagram, allowing users to share posts on both platforms. This seamless connection has continued to attract new Instagram users, bolstering its user numbers despite the initial slowdown in growth.

Early Surge and Subsequent Plateau

At its launch, Threads experienced a meteoric rise, reaching 100 million users within just five days. However, this explosive growth soon plateaued as user interest dipped. Despite this, the platform continued to grow, with user numbers rising from 130 million in February to 150 million in April.

Global Reach and Diverse Content

Threads has a global presence, with users in over 100 countries. The platform supports content sharing on the Fediverse, enabling various interactions. According to Meta, 63% of Threads’ posts are text-based, and one in four posts includes at least one photo. Additionally, voice notes have become a popular feature among users.

Comparison with Competitors

While it has made notable progress, it still trails behind X, which boasts over 55 million daily users worldwide. Meta’s suite of apps—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp—reached 3.24 billion daily users between January and March 2024, up from 3.19 billion in the previous quarter.

Conclusion

It is evident it has made significant strides in its first year, achieving substantial user growth and integrating seamlessly with Instagram. Despite a slowdown in its initial rapid growth, the platform continues to expand and evolve, offering a diverse range of content and engaging users across the globe. As Threads enters its second year, it will be interesting to see how it continues to compete in the dynamic social media landscape.
